On June 23rd our youths were on display at the Harris H.C. organised event at Riverside, Dundee on a dry, occasionally sunny, but pleasantly warm day.
Our planned two teams in the 10 & under event were struck a blow with three very late call-offs and a no-show but after a bit of negotiation with the organisers and the other clubs present we were allowed to withdraw a team without ruining the day for anyone
Our one remaining Carnegie Eagles team comprising of Chloe Faulkener, Logan Laing, Ellie Ralph, Sophie Ralph and a young lady, Jessica, from the Kinross club who agreed to guest for us for the day performed well throughout the morning playing six games, winning four of them-drawing one and losing just one. The opener against Kinross ‘A’ was our only defeat by a solitary 1 – 0 score-line as our players tried to remind themselves what to do. Our guest player, Jessica, (who I am sure had been pressured not to score against her own team) was a formidable force scoring a hat-trick in each of our next three games as we beat Harris Hawks ‘B’ three nil, Madras 4 – 0 (4th goal by Chloe) then even though we lost five goals against Kinross B a score-line of 5 – 3 was a good effort by everyone. After a one game break our team resumed refreshed, notching up a 3 – 1 win against Harris ‘A’ with goals from Chloe (2) and Jessica followed by a great final game against Grove where we held them to a 3 – 3 draw with all three being scored by Chloe.
The best thing is that all players had fun – even asking when the next one was before leaving for home.
We also struggled a little to achieve our planned two teams in the 12 & under event after a late call-off and two other expected players failing to appear leaving us with 11 players for the 6-a-side event. A quick re-shuffle of our players allowed us to field the initial Carnegie Lions as: Kai Wilson, Anna MacKenzie, Sarah Milne, Ellie Ralph, Sophie Ralph, Joshua Love and the initial Carnegie tigers as Reuben MacLeod (G.K.), Zara Webb, Sean Habrovitsky, Hannah Lowe and Eilidh Sneddon, but we were able to swap players between teams when the playing schedule allowed so it was a great performance by all concerned with varying amounts of playing time for each of our players.
By the end of the event Carnegie Lions had played five games Winning three and losing two by beating Kinross ‘B’ 3 – 0, Harris Hawks ‘B’ 3 – 1 and Dundee Wanderers YS 5 – 1 losing narrowly to Harris ‘A’ 0 – 1 and Dundee Wanderers YG 0 – 1.
Carnegie Tigers played six games winning ALL SIX against Kinross ‘B’ by 5 – 0, Grove by 2 – 0, Dundee Wanderers by 3 – 1, Harris Hawks by 5 – 0, Kinross ‘A’ by 2 – 0 and Kinross ‘B’ by 6 – 1 to round off a very successful day by both squads.
The 14 & under event was just as much a struggle numbers-wise but this time for the opposite reason – WE HAD TOO MANY players, 14 in fact for this 8-a-side event due to two of our U12 asking to play extra games and two players turning up unexpectedly. Our players however were very understanding and with multiple substitutions and a bit of persuading oppositions to play 9 or 10-a-side everyone got reasonable pitch time and again we enjoyed success in our four 20 minute half-pitch games. Our playing squad consisted of: Ryan Dempsey, Reuben MacLeod, Matthew Cromwell, Zara Webb, Owen McKenzie, Alice Shanley, Sean Habrovitsky, Sarah Milne, Joshua Love, Chris Tweddle, Hannah Lowe, Callum Neil, Alex Thomson and Kai Wilson.
Game 1 against a good Grove side saw us thrash out a deserved 1 – 1 draw. Game 2 against Dundee Wanderers was no less tough and a final score of 1 – 1 was very satisfying. Game 3 against Grove saw a lot of end-to-end action but with some good goalkeeping by Reuben we managed to hold on to record a very creditable and hard fought 2 – 1 win. Our final game against Kinross was a little less troublesome and we rounded the day off with a deserved 3 – 1 win.
A day with so many success stories on the pitch was great to see. These events are classed as “festivals” so winning is not the prime aim, though it is nice and satisfying for each individual to do so, they are all about team-work, improving skills and above all HAVING FUN. We would dearly love to enter more teams at each age group but we need more volunteers to play and to help out on the day so please give it more thought whether you are a beginner or accomplished regular because both ends of the scale will learn something from playing with no pressure being applied to bring home success only.
