L1s bow out in a spirited Scottish Plate performance

Dunfermline Carnegie travelled to Uddingston on Sunday for round 2 of the Scottish Plate.

Uddingston, who are a Premiership team and 3 leagues above Carnegie, took a heavy 11-2 beating in the first round of the Scottish Cup, failing to progress. They dropped into the Scottish Plate, to face off against Carnegie, who had faced a tough game against top Premiership side Edinburgh University 1’s, in the first round of the Cup.

The odds were stacked against Carnegie but they went into the game with enthusiasm and determination to do themselves proud.

Uddingston lined up strong, with their international signings showing their flair and talent, against a Carnegie side who had a mere 11 players. Uddingston played at a quick pace from the start and it took some time for Carnegie to adjust. Carnegie were pinned into their own half throughout the first two quarters and found themselves 8-0 down by half time.

They did however demonstrate some excellent play, which resulted in an attacking short corner being awarded. They nearly found the net, with youngster Emma Mathie’s drag flick being saved by the diving goalkeeper.

Carnegie played with much more confidence in the third quarter, only conceding 2 goals. Uddingston were awarded a penalty stroke, which goalkeeper Ruth Poole saved with a full-stretch stick block. Uddingston will have been frustrated with themselves to have not put more goals past Carnegie during this passage of play and throughout the game as a whole.

The game ended with a 14-0 scoreline to the home side, however Carnegie were the winners in terms of spirit, attitude and perseverance.

MVP was awarded to Ruth Poole
